Curriculum Excellence - Middle School

The Middle School (Years 7 to 9)

The Middle School seeks to respond to students’ needs to grow and change, to become independent and develop into active and reflective participants in society. It offers these opportunities in a safe and supportive environment, which creates a link between Junior and Senior Schools and eases each student’s transition through schooling.

The Middle Years Curriculum is student-centred and approached in a cross- curricular manner. The curriculum aims for an holistic approach to teaching by incorporating productive pedagogy or teaching which fosters the love for learning. It helps the students to master thinking skills which empower them to learn, with greater awareness of their individual learning style. This approach allows students to develop and reinforce learning skills in decision-making, critical thinking, problem-solving and information processing across all learning areas. Students are provided with opportunities to develop leadership skills. Values, ethics and personal development are part of the integrated curriculum and all students participate in studying Religious Education.

The curriculum encompasses all Key Learning Areas and students study English, Mathematics, Science, Religious Education, Studies of Society and Environment, the Arts, Technology, Health and Physical Education and Languages other than English with both core and specialist teachers.

Please note:
From 2006, the School moved to one common curriculum, using Queensland Studies Authority Syllabuses from the Preparatory Year to Year 12. By 2009 all curriculum will be based on the Queensland Studies Authority Syllabuses. This will mean the gradual phasing out of the International Baccalaureate Programme (IBMYP) in the Middle School. The IBMYP will continue in:

  • 2007 - Years 9 to 10
  • 2008 - Year 10

The curriculum for Years 7 to 9 is broad-based, requiring students to cover each of the Key Learning Areas.

  • Inquisitive minds are stimulated
  • Learning capabilities are extended
  • Improved self-confidence
  • New challenges
  • Enthusiasm for learning among peers

Commitment
Girls who have a strong desire to learn and proven academic records are encouraged to apply to join some or all LEAP courses offered for their year group. It is important to note that the commitment to every LEAP course is for one full academic year. The School is able to offer only one LEAP class of 25 girls per year level in each of the courses.
