Inter-House School Musicals

The 2013 House Musicals saw St Hilda’s School taking a trip through time with the theme ‘Back to the Future’. The trip was arranged from hundreds of girls from across the houses, who stepped into the roles of production crew, dancers, singers, musicians, actors and stage hands.

Over the course of five weeks, mountainous tasks were tackled head on and achieved with such dedication and spirit that made us all proud of these girls. Scripts needed writing, dances required choreography and original compositions were created from inspiration and talent alone. The fact that these jobs were accomplished by the girls themselves, with minimal teacher direction showed us all what can really happen when our girls put their minds to it.

Not to say of course, that there weren’t teachers willing to put in their hard work and effort to help the houses achieve their best. Heads of House, Kate Powell, Susan Tiplady and Carly Damon worked tirelessly along with their house staff to attend rehearsals and co-ordinate the efforts of the production teams. Janette Kelly and the music staff did an amazing job in turning our bands and singers into the stars that they were and so many other teachers helped behind the scenes to make costumes, sell tickets and help out backstage.

But of course, the real stars were the girls themselves. Three wonderful performances that showcased how girls are looking back to previous House Musicals and creating their own magical stories – from Karragaroo’s tale of creating that timeless song from the best of the 50’s 80’s and 90’s, to Banksia’s story of Ancient Greek Gods working with 22nd century Apple Store Owners to save the world (and a wedding!) and of course Meleleuca’s inspirational tale of women’s rights over the past fifty years and how lucky the girls of today really are.

Each and every award given on the night was truly well-deserved and while Karragaroo took home the award for Best Musical, all the girls should be immensely proud of their productions. Hopefully these incredibly talented girls will continue to look into the past and look forward to the future.
