Based on the well known 1920s comic strip Little Orphan Annie, the musical Annie was created in 1977 and ran for nearly 6 years on Broadway. Subsequently it was made into a movie in 1982 and again in 1999. Its story-telling is accomplished through what is known in music theatre as ‘the triple threat’ – the art of performers being at ease in the three equal facets of music theatre performance – acting, dancing and singing.

Annie will be presented at the Gold Coast Arts Centre in three performances Friday 30 April 7.30pm and Saturday 1 May at 1.30pm and 7.30pm.

St Hilda’s collaborates with NIDA student for Annie
St Hilda’s Old Girl Hanna Sandgren, who graduated in 2005, has put her amazing talents to work to create astonishing sets and costume designs for the School’s 2010 production of the hit musical Annie.
“It was an honour to be asked to put forward some ideas for Annie, said Hanna who graduated with an OP1 and saw her art work included in the prestigious 2005 Minister’s Exhibition which travelled throughout regional Queensland.

Hanna was staying with her family on the Gold Coast for the Christmas holidays and met with the School’s Head of Performing Arts Mrs Belinda Gravel and Director of Music Miss Janette Kelly who are leading the creative team behind the musical production.
“Over tea and scones, we giggled our way to many fun, budget-friendly ideas,” said Hanna.
According to Mrs Gravel, Hanna’s designs are truly amazing and reflect Hanna’s most recent experience studying at National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA).
