2018 QGSSSA Athletics

The 2018 QGSSSA Athletics Meet will certainly be one to remember as the girls were presented with some very challenging weather conditions throughout the competition. Their spirits certainly weren’t dampened and the day saw some excellent results in both the track and field, with many girls having podium finishes on the day. It was very disappointing to not be able to run the Ball Games event in conjunction with the 110 year QGSSSA celebrations. We hope that this event is run at a later date, as our Year 7 team consisting of Holly Smith, Amber Hurley, Sasha Currie, Jessica Jolly, Cyra Bender, Sienna Thompson, Kiana Dariush-Far and Zoe Bennett were unable to compete for St Hilda’s due to the cancellation of the event. Our team finished a consistent 9th in the Aggregate and 7th in the Percentage Cup. A big thank you to Sharon Hannan our Director of Athletics and Cross Country, Peter Hannan, Kara Hawke and our specialist coaches for all of their time and efforts over the duration of the Athletics season. The Sport team headed by Mrs Stewart did an amazing job assisting the coaching staff with improving the training experiences for our girls. We are edging closer to the 8th spot overall. We are certainly moving in the right direction, being able to offer the girls of St Hilda’s access to world class coaches, many of whom have competed on the State, National and International stage themselves. We wish our Year 12 QG Athletics girls all the very best for the future – thank you for the contributions you have made over your time in the Middle Senior school.

2018 QLD All Schools Touch Championships

On Thursday to Saturday 11-13 October, the St Hilda’s Under 15 team and Under 18 team were able to compete at the Queensland All Schools Touch competition in Brisbane. It’s an amazing experience being able to compete with teams from all over Queensland as well as some international teams. Unfortunately, all of Saturday’s games were cancelled due to the weather, but the U15’s team were still able to play 3 games and the U18’s played 4 on Thursday and Friday. It was a great opportunity for all the girls to expand their touch skills as we had the chance to play schools we have not played before, as they don’t compete in the QG competition. This saw a great improvement in the girls and will help them for next year’s QG and All Schools competitions in the future. I know that all the girls are very happy that they had the opportunity to play at Queensland All Schools Touch and are looking forward to next year’s competition, which will hopefully be played in better weather. All the girls had a great time at the competition being able to expand on their game play, improve technique and most importantly building on the comradery within the team. Thank you for this amazing opportunity and I know that the girls are already looking forward to next year’s competition.

2018 QLD U18 Hockey

In Week 1 of Term 4, Rachel Gadd and Laney Smith toured New Zealand as part of the QLD U18 Hockey team. In Wellington, Rachel and Laney played against Napier and Hawkes Bay, in Rotorua against an U21 Maori team, and in Auckland against North Harbour and Auckland. Congratulations to both girls on their selection in this team.

2018 National Snowsports Championships-Perisher NSW

Two of our 2018 Snowsports participants, Maddison and Jacqueline Cartwright hit the slopes of Perisher late last term to compete in the 2018 National Championships. This was the first time the girls were able to compete in their beloved sport at this level. Well done, girls! We are sure this will be the first of many experiences for you.

2018 State Teams Swimming Championships

Lucinda (Lulu) Macleod was selected to represent QLD at the State Teams Championships from 3rd to 5th October. Lulu had a fantastic weekend taking home 4 Gold and a Silver medal with four personal bests. To top it off, Lulu was awarded the 13/14 yrs Female Swimmer of the Meet and her age group was awarded Champion Female Team 13/14 yrs.

Congratulations Jessica Cleverly!

Jessica has been selected as a team member of the Australian Gymnastics Team Future Squad. Jess was selected following her fantastic results at the recent Australian Classic competition. Jess and her coach Olga will travel to the AIS in November to train with the 24 athletes selected to attend the WAG Team Future Advanced Camp. All of the daily trips to Brisbane to train have definitely paid off Jess. Congratulations.
