Online Learning in Middle and Senior School

Although face-to-face classroom teaching has continued to be the primary mode of learning delivery in mainstream schools in the twenty-first century, it has increasingly been supplemented by online learning.

Consequently, the Middle School and Senior School staff at St Hilda’s are confident that effective learning and teaching can continue in an off-campus context.

Learning Platforms

Our online learning approach seeks to best leverage the skills that staff and students have built up over a number of years and which have been refined and adapted in recent times. Below are the major platforms that will be used in each sub-school. In addition to this list, staff will continue to use a variety of ICT-based solutions depending on their subject areas and they will communicate regularly with their classes via School email.

This is the major online learning tool in Middle Senior School. We have been refining our Blackboard courses for over a decade. Students are very familiar with this environment. Students will find all staff-produced documents, links, videos and a range of other educational materials. It is also where they will submit major pieces of work for assessment. Blackboard is the system used by the vast majority of universities in Australia, including Griffith and Bond on the Gold Coast.

Microsoft Teams
A leading video conferencing and collaboration tool to be used for live lessons, recording of lessons and to connect teachers and students in live learning and group work. This application is used extensively by leading Australian universities.

Microsoft OneNote
A collaborative program used extensively in Mathematics and various other subjects.

Office365 and OneDrive
Allows resource and document sharing

Used by some Year 7 and 8 classes. On this platform, students can create, reflect, share, and collaborate using photos, videos, drawings, text, PDFs, and links.

More specialised software will be used in elective subjects, for example Music, Art and Media Arts.

For many Schools, 2021 will see a mix of some students learning at school and others learning from home. How long this will continue for, and if it will need to be adjusted again, remains uncertain. Dr Salter (a specialist in study skills) has released a video series answering the most commonly asked FAQs to help Years 7-12 families make the learning taking place at home as effective as possible this term.

Feedback from parents and students will be important, particularly in the early stages of Online Learning.

Classroom teachers are expecting to receive emails from both parents and students, but please bear in mind that they will not be able to reply immediately and that any correspondence will generally take place during school hours. Where possible, students are encouraged to ask questions during lessons.

Urgent matters of a pastoral nature can be directed to the Heads of Schools. Urgent academic matters can be directed to the Learning and Teaching Team.
