On April 29, 2024, St Hilda’s School celebrated a momentous occasion as it welcomed back acclaimed Australian journalist and foreign correspondent, Peter Greste, to the esteemed Granowski Auditorium. This special Q&A session, held five years after Peter's initial visit, provided St Hilda's School community with a unique opportunity to engage with one of journalism's most courageous and principled figures.

Peter’s connection with St Hilda's School runs deep; during his time in captivity, St Hilda's Amnesty students, under the guidance of Ms O’Neill and Ms Mahon, actively participated in a global campaign advocating for his release. In 2019, we were honoured when Professor Greste graciously visited to express his gratitude to St Hilda's School students for their unwavering support. Now, we are privileged to welcome him back once again.

The evening commenced with a captivating Arrival music performance by senior student Flora, setting a harmonious tone for an engaging and insightful gathering. St Hilda's School Captain Tara extended a warm welcome, while Montana delivered a heartfelt Acknowledgement of Country, paying tribute to the traditional custodians of the land.

The heart of our discussion revolved around three pivotal themes: the essence of journalistic integrity, navigating the truth in today's dynamic world, and the significance of seeking solutions amidst challenges. Peter Greste’s expertise sparked meaningful conversations, leaving the audience with profound reflections.

A notable highlight was the commissioning of the soapbox, symbolising free speech and expression. Past winners Aileen and Lila shared eloquent speeches, enriching St Hilda's School discussions further.

In a gesture of appreciation, Audrey and Zara presented Peter Greste with a thoughtful gift, acknowledging his invaluable contributions to the Q&A session. The night concluded with a soulful flute performance by Aurora, leaving us all inspired and united.

“Having Peter Greste share his story and insights with us was profoundly inspiring. His dedication to upholding the truth, even in the face of immense personal risk, is a testament to the vital role of journalism in our society. We are deeply honoured to have hosted such an influential figure"

Mrs Catherine Syms, Head of RE and Ethics

Peter’s visit underscores St Hilda’s School's dedication to fostering global awareness among our students and the wider community. It was an evening of enriching dialogue, learning, and inspiration, emphasising the enduring importance of journalism and the fundamental value of freedom of the press.
