Celebrating the Olympic Spirit

Like so many, I continue to be captivated by the Olympic Games in Paris with a deep sense of admiration and inspiration. The Olympics and upcoming Paralympics are more than just a showcase of athletic prowess; they are a celebration of human spirit, determination, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. These global events remind us of what can be achieved through hard work, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in oneself; qualities that we strive to nurture in every one of our St Hilda’s girls.

The Games have always been a powerful symbol of unity and aspiration. Athletes from diverse backgrounds, representing nations from around the world, come together to compete at the highest level, each with their own story of sacrifice, discipline, and courage. They are a beacon of what is possible when dreams are pursued with passion and dedication. Our very own Holly (Year 9) travelled to Paris this week in preparation for her Paralympic debut. As a community we will continue to cheer her on as she goes for gold in the coming weeks.

Australia and our female athletes have a strong and proud history of success, and these Games have continued to set new standards of excellence. Australia competed in 42 of the 45 sports and came home with 53 medals (18 Gold, 19 Silver, and 16 Bronze). From the swimming pool to the track, from gymnastics to rowing, our Australian women have shown the world what it means to compete with grace, strength, and resilience.

Grace, strength and resilience are three characteristics that we are committed to fostering in our St Hilda’s girls. Whether in sports, academics, the arts, or any other field they choose to pursue, our entire community supports each one of our St Hilda’s girls to embrace challenges, learn from setbacks, and never give up on their goals. There is always much to celebrate in the achievements of our girls and to follow are a few notable highlights of this past month:

  • Our Opens Volleyball girls won a Bronze medal at the Volleyball Queensland Senior Schools Cup.
  • 1723349164970

  • IMG 8374

As we celebrate the ambitions of our inspiring St Hilda’s girls, we celebrate the true spirit of St Hilda’s. Whether they aspire to be athletes, scientists, artists, or leaders in their chosen fields, their potential is limitless. In true St Hilda’s spirit, our inspired girls follow their dreams and aspirations, not for themselves alone, but also to inspire and champion those around them to dream big and to go for gold!

Thank you for your ongoing support.

The Chaplain's Column - August 2024

Wednesday, 14 August will see nineteen Junior School students baptised and/or take their First Communion. This is an annual event and is prepared for by students in Year 4 studying the Christian Sacrament of Holy Communion as part of their RE programme. There are two great or canonical sacraments in the Christian Church, Baptism and Holy Communion. These two are directly commanded by Jesus who before his ascension told his disciples to go and preach the good news of his resurrection and baptise those who believed.

Earlier in the Last Supper he had specifically claimed the bread and the wine of that meal to be his body and his blood and that his followers were to eat and drink them in memory of him or to commemorate him. The word sacrament means to make holy so in Baptism a person is made holy and a dedicated follower of Jesus while in Holy Communion that dedication is strengthened and renewed by the taking of the bread and the drinking of the wine which is a symbolic act of participating in the risen life of Christ.

While Baptism is a single act, Holy Communion is a repeated act for the strengthen of the individual Christian to live out their life of faith. Both are, as the Catechism has it, “outward and visible signs of an inward and spiritual grace. “There are five other acts which are sacramental, Private Confession, Confirmation, Holy Matrimony, Ordination and the Last Rites. These five are not of the same order as the Great Sacraments but are used in the living out of a Christian’s life and his or her vocation. Thus, when two people marry, it is the greatest commitment that they can make to each other. Like any relationship, a marital one is open to stresses and strains as well as joy and happiness. Thus, commending the couple to God’s grace in an act of worship seems a most appropriate thing to do. Similarly, Private Confession is available to those who wish to hear that they are forgiven by God which enables them to forgive themselves and move on in their life.

As one divine put it that the Anglican position on Private Confession is that “none must, all may, and some should.” Ordination is the setting apart of someone through the laying on of hands by the bishop for ministry as a deacon, priest or bishop. Confirmation is often the time when a person takes on the promises made for them in infant baptism and, again is signified by the laying on of hands by the bishop. Last rites are a combination of prayers, confession and committal to God for a person at the end of their life. One final thought on sacraments and sacramental acts is that they involve the whole of our senses and make “real” that which is spiritual and mystical.

Aurora Salmon Year 11 – National Youth Wind Ensemble of Scotland

  • DSC 2956

Through her involvement in the Young Conservatorium Wind Orchestra in Brisbane, flautist Aurora Salmon (Year 11) was asked to audition late last year to be involved in an exchange program that the Qld Conservatorium Griffith University runs with the National Youth Wind Ensemble of Scotland.

Her success at this audition enabled her to participate, along with 6 other young Queensland musicians, in a two week program at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Along with their conductor, Stephanie Smith, Aurora and her fellow musicians were able to visit London and the Scottish highlands as well as work with the instrumental specialists in sectional and full ensemble rehearsals, culminating in a public showcase concert at the end of the program.

Congratulations to Aurora on her achievements at this international event.
