Celebrating the
Olympic Spirit
Like
so many, I continue to be captivated by the Olympic Games in Paris with a deep
sense of admiration and inspiration. The Olympics and upcoming Paralympics are
more than just a showcase of athletic prowess; they are a celebration of human
spirit, determination, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. These global
events remind us of what can be achieved through hard work, perseverance, and
an unwavering belief in oneself; qualities that we strive to nurture in every
one of our St Hilda’s girls.
The
Games have always been a powerful symbol of unity and aspiration. Athletes from
diverse backgrounds, representing nations from around the world, come together
to compete at the highest level, each with their own story of sacrifice,
discipline, and courage. They are a beacon of what is possible when dreams are
pursued with passion and dedication. Our very own Holly (Year 9) travelled to
Paris this week in preparation for her Paralympic debut. As a community we will
continue to cheer her on as she goes for gold in the coming weeks.
Australia
and our female athletes have a strong and proud history of success, and these Games
have continued to set new standards of excellence. Australia competed in 42 of
the 45 sports and came home with 53 medals (18 Gold, 19 Silver, and 16 Bronze).
From the swimming pool to the track, from gymnastics to rowing, our Australian
women have shown the world what it means to compete with grace, strength, and
resilience.
Grace,
strength and resilience are three characteristics that we are committed to
fostering in our St Hilda’s girls. Whether in sports, academics, the arts, or
any other field they choose to pursue, our entire community supports each one
of our St Hilda’s girls to embrace challenges, learn from setbacks, and never
give up on their goals. There is always much to celebrate in the achievements
of our girls and to follow are a few notable highlights of this past month:
- Our Opens Volleyball girls won a Bronze medal at the Volleyball Queensland Senior Schools Cup.
- Year 10 Student, Sienna and Year 8 Student, Fleur, each won their age-group High Jump competition at the QGSSSA Impi Sportswear Ignition Series Athletics Meet.
- Year 8 Student, Emma, won 3 Bronze medals and 1 Silver medal at the National School Swimming Championships.
- Year 9 Student, Amelia placed 1st and Year 5 Student, Macy, placed 2nd for Queensland in their respective divisions in the Ski Cross at the Interschools Snowsports Championships at Thredbo NSW.
- Over 65 Junior School girls proudly represented St Hilda’s at the Andrews Cup Soccer in Toowoomba, with the Senior B Team placing equal 1st and Junior B Team placing 3rd.
- Our Rhythm and Blues Band placed 1st and received a Gold Award at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod.
- Year 5 students teamed up with their TSS peers to tackle a series of exciting challenges in the 2024 TriBot Cup.
- Year 8 Student, Hannah, and Year 12 Student, Eliza, were announced as the winners of the 2024 Ethics Soapbox Finals.
- Year 9 Students Sophie, Charlotte, Demi, Vanessa and Lila were awarded 3rd place out of 14 schools in the Queensland Readers Cup.
- Our Year 12 team progressed as a Top 10 finalist in the 2024 Gold Coast Mayor's Technology and Innovation Awards.
- Year 12 Student, Audrey, was shortlisted for the John Locke Institute 2024 Global Essay Prize for her essay on the topic of optimal global population.
- 80 of our Senior girls (including Ms Upasiri!) took part in the Cancer Council’s Ponytail Project campaign to raise funds that will support people impacted by cancer, raising over $55,000 and donating their hair to those in need.
As
we celebrate the ambitions of our inspiring St Hilda’s girls, we celebrate the
true spirit of St Hilda’s. Whether they aspire to be athletes, scientists,
artists, or leaders in their chosen fields, their potential is limitless. In
true St Hilda’s spirit, our inspired girls follow their dreams and aspirations,
not for themselves alone, but also to inspire and champion those around them to
dream big and to go for gold!
Thank you
for your ongoing support.
