Life Stories

Pam Prescott (1965)

Brisbane Outrigger Canoe Club, led by Head Coach and four times World Champion, St Hilda’s Old Girl Pam Prescott (1965), competed at the Hawaiian Outrigger championships late last year. The women’s team placed eighth in the Open Division (up to 40 years) from 137 crews and in the top 40 in the Masters Division (aged 50 to 60 years).

A high point of the meet was Brisbane Outrigger winning the $12,000 OC6 canoe in the random draw. This was the first team

outside of Hawaii to ever win this prize, accepted by Pam on behalf of the club; she then fronted the camera and did numerous

television interviews that aired in Hawaii.

Today, Pam is training hard with her club Outrigger Australia OCC and will compete in this year’s National and South Queensland Zone Sprint/Marathon and Changeover events including the Gold Coast Cup and Hamilton Island Cup.

Pam works as an instructor for Queensland Canoeing and has three adult children, Tony and daughters Kim and Kellie Prescott who both attended St Hilda’s School. Kim (1991) is married with a son Harry and has a veterinary surgery at Tugun whilst Kellie (1994) is public relations manager at Brisbane’s Regatta Hotel and studying public relations at university.

Samantha Strauss (1977)

Samantha was the guest speaker at the 2011 Senior Graduation where she spoke of her desire to make ballet, her career. A back injury ended her dream and Samantha then turned her passion to behind-the-scenes, studying Film and Television at Bond University. Today, she is one of Australia’s most exciting young screenwriters, behind the ABC series Dance Academy, now signed for a second season. The 52-part series is a teen drama that follows the stories of six teenagers attending Sydney’s National Academy of Dance. Dance Academy won a Logie for Most Outstanding Children’s Program and in November last year, Samantha attended the International Emmy Awards in New York where Dance Academy was nominated for the Best Children and Young People’s Production.
