Student Support

There is an extensive system of support at St Hilda’s to enable students to achieve their best. The individuals regularly work together to ensure that student pastoral and learning needs are met.

Heads of Year
The Heads of Year are often the first contact when a student is experiencing personal challenges or difficulties. Heads of Year are able to link the student with the support they need, gather and disseminate information and provide initial guidance and support to the student.

Tutorials
In a typical week, there are 14 after-school tutorials held in the Senior School. Held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The subjects covered range though English, Mathematics and the Sciences to specialist areas such as Accounting, Business Organisation and Management and each of the languages. Girls are urged to be proactive in managing their learning by attending tutorials when needed. Some students go regularly, while others choose to attend in the lead-up to exams.

For further information, contact the Senior School Centre on 07-5577 7250.

Learning Enhancement

When learning difficulties are limiting a girl’s ability to achieve her best, Learning Enhancement staff work with parents and teachers to identify the exact nature of the issue so that support can be put in place. Teachers may be able to modify their strategies or additional resources are provided for the girl. Students with significant and ongoing difficulties may, at the discretion of the Head of Senior School and the Director of Curriculum, join a Learning Enhancement class in Year 10 or receive individual support. For further information, contact:  Mrs Lyn Kirwan. Learning Enhancement Co-ordinator.  Ph: 07-5577 7215.  mail: lkirwan@sthildas.qld.edu.au

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Students for whom English is not the first language and who require assistance are provided tutorial support and modified programs so they might integrate as quickly as possible into their new learning environment. Girls are given the opportunity to work on improving their spoken and written English, while the ESL teacher provides them with support to engage with the mainstream curriculum. For further information, contact:  Mrs Kate Powel. ESL Co-ordinator.  Ph: 07-5577 7176.  Email: kpowell@sthildas.qld.edu.au
